Merz b. Schwanen
In 1911, Balthasar Merz established a knitwear factory nestled in Germany's Swabian Alps producing durable workwear and undergarments. Though the original company ceased operations in 2005, its legacy was rekindled in 2011 when Berlin-based designers Peter and Gitta Plotnicki discovered a vintage Merz henley at a flea market. This serendipitous find led them to revive the brand, honoring its heritage by utilizing original loopwheel knitting machines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
These antique machines produce seamless garments known for their exceptional comfort and longevity. The resulting fabric is soft and durable, with a commitment to quality over speed.
Merz b.'s dedication to authenticity and sustainability has garnered international acclaim. Notably, their 215 loopwheeled T-shirt gained widespread attention after being featured in the television series "The Bear," leading to a surge in global demand—and Fancy Groceries was one of the few retailers to stock them!
